I noticed C9 (Continent of the Ninth Seal) during one of my MMO ventures around the net. I was looking for something new and fresh. C9 seemed like a good bet, though back then it was still being created. Later, I totally forgot about the game until Closed Beta tests started. I watched a few trailers and I was shocked how bad the game was! Repetitive gameplay, ugly graphics, small selection of characters, etc. I decided not to touch C9 at all. After a year or so I heard rumors of how Continent of the Ninth Seal is a good game, even better than my favorite Vindictus. I just couldn’t let that pass, and decided to take a closer look at C9. After playing, my view on C9 changed dramatically. I have to admit my previous judgment was waaaay off…
1) Graphics. Continent of the Ninth Seal graphics are debatable. They’re extremely good and detailed (even flashy sometimes!), but have that specific Asian ‘feel’ to it. I find them more than OK, but I know some people might dislike or even hate C9 for its graphics immediately.

2) Characters. Similarly to Vindictus, C9 has a number of gender-locked characters. Fortunately, the selection is a lot wider. When you start the game, you get to choose from ‘mere’ 4 characters – Fighter, Hunter, Witchblade and Shaman. That already pretty much covers the basic set of classes you’ll have in your average MMORPG title. However, C9 goes a bit further. Upon reaching a certain level, Fighter, Hunter and Witchblade can choose amongst 3 class advancements (Shadowknight for Witchblade is available in Korea only so far), while Shaman can select 1 of 4. Although all Shaman classes look pretty much the same (maybe except the Vindictus scythe-wielding sorceress clone), not all MMORPGs have the ‘magic trickster’ type class (here: Witchblade Warden, using ice magic spells). I personally enjoyed playing Witchblade the most for her frequent critical hits and fast-paced gameplay.
3) Gameplay. Continent of the Ninth Seal is an instance-based, fast-paced action MMORPG. As such, you engage combat in closed dungeon ‘dimensions’ available only to you and your party. In addition, movement is performed with WSAD + Space (jump), hence characters’ mobility is relatively good. Combos are executed either using the regular set of 1-0 number keys (above qwerty), or direction keys + mouse. The fact that you can use skills with your mouse and direction keys adds that arcade feel to C9. To make things even better, skills are not direction-locked and you can use them rotating your character. Personally, I doubt any other MMORPG (maybe except GunZ: The Duel and other similar) could beat Continent of the Ninth Seal when it comes to fluidity of gameplay. Chaining skills has never been so easy and natural!
4) Dungeons and instances. Ranging from mines and forests to…even more forests. My character is just level 16, hence it’s hard for me to judge how do end-game dungeons look like. The only thing I can say is that continent 1 offers a lot of gameplay and as the title suggests, the complete game has 9 continents in total. I can’t really see any other instance-based MMORPG having that much game content. In addition, the player can attempt each dungeon at 4 difficulty levels – Normal, Hard, Expert and Master. Each consecutive difficulty offers more and harder monsters to kill, but also better loot and more gold. Although, in order to play Hard you have to complete Normal first. Unfortunately, unlike Vindictus, C9 dungeons are usually not made up of stages and the look of a dungeon doesn’t change every run. That makes doing dungeons a bit tedious and repetitive.

5) Crafting System. I specifically want to mention it, because it seemed quite well-developed to me. Usually MMORPGs feature only ‘leveling up’ equipment (adding +1, etc.) or enchanting it with certain properties. In C9 you can also Refine, Combine, Dismantle equipment and more. In addition, at level 14-15 you can learn your Artisan Profession, allowing you to craft clothing, armors and weapons, brew potions or even cook! Regardless of your craft, you can decompose materials for all occupations into Artisan Crystals, useful to your chosen profession.Unfortunately, you’ll have to do a great deal of dungeon runs to craft a complete set of any equipment, even at lower levels.
5) Plot. Like every MMO game, C9 also has one. However, except for occasional NPC assists during dungeon raids, I didn’t really feel it. It’s probably ‘there’, but not as prevalent as in for example Aion.
All in all, if you don’t mind C9 being instance-based and you’re looking for fast-paced action gameplay, Continent of the Ninth Seal is the game for you! You’ll enjoy it greatly, no doubt.
